Jozankei hot springs, located 26km in the south of Sapporo are only 1 hour away from downtown by car. Owning the beautiful scenery that changes with each season, this place is often referred to as the “back room” of Sapporo and known as one of the most famous hot spring villages in Hokkaido together with Toya hot springs and Noboribetsu hot springs.
The history of Jozankei hot springs dates back to the year of Keio 2 (1866), when Miizumi Jozan, an ascetic monk, discovered the hot spring source under the guidance of the Ainu people and laid the foundation of the hot spring village after a lot of hard work and efforts. Therefore, the place was named “Jozankei” to memorize his extraordinary achievements.
The hot spring water gushing out in the Jozankei area contains sodium chloride; featuring its colorless, transparent and mildly salty qualities. It is one of the most popular types of spring in Japan and is effective on anemia, poor circulation, neuralgia and arthralgia, etc.
